Top Gun: Maverick – A Detailed Description
Storyline and Plot
Top Gun: Maverick is a 2022 American action drama film directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, Christopher McQuarrie, and Peter Craig. The film is a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise as Captain Pete Maverick Mitchell.
The movie takes place roughly thirty years after the events of the original film. Maverick, now in his fifties, finds himself back at the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (also known as U.S. Navy-Fighter Weapons School – TOPGUN) despite his repeated insubordination and avoidance of promotions. His friend and former Top Gun rival, Admiral Tom Iceman Kazansky (Val Kilmer), often protects Maverick from disciplinary actions.
Maverick is tasked with training a group of elite fighter pilots, including Bradley Rooster Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his deceased best friend, Lieutenant Nick Goose Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). The mission is to destroy an unsanctioned uranium enrichment plant located in an underground bunker at the end of a canyon, which is defended by surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), GPS jammers, and fifth-generation Su-57 fighters.
Maverick devises a plan involving two pairs of F/A-18E/F Super Hornets armed with laser-guided bombs. However, instead of participating in the strike, he is to train the elite group of Top Gun graduates assembled by Air Boss Vice Admiral Beau Cyclone Simpson (Jon Hamm). The mission parameters are relaxed by Cyclone to make the execution easier but make escape much more difficult. Maverick makes an unauthorized flight through the course with his preferred parameters, proving that it can be done, which leads to his reluctant appointment as team leader.
The film follows Maverick as he confronts his past and navigates an uncomfortable relationship with Rooster, who resents Maverick for pulling his application and setting his career back by four years. The mission is carried out with Maverick picking Rooster as his wingman, and they are joined by Hangman, Phoenix, Fanboy, Payback, and Bob. They fly toward the facility, with their nearby aircraft carrier firing Tomahawk missiles at the base to destroy the runway, causing enemy jets to scramble back toward the target.
The pilots manage to launch a missile and destroy the facility, but the enemy sends more pilots after them. Maverick’s jet is shot at, causing him to crash. Rooster turns around and goes to save Maverick. A chopper begins firing at Maverick while he is on foot, but Rooster shoots it down, just before his own jet is shot down, and he manages to eject himself in time. Maverick and Rooster reunite and devise a plan to get out of there. They spot an F-14 Tomcat and take control of it. They start to fly away and are pursued by enemy jets, leading to a dogfight. Although Maverick manages to take two of them out with bullets and flares, they run out of weaponry just as a third jet comes their way. Rooster is also unable to eject himself, so the two accept that they are about to die until Hangman comes through and destroys the last jet.
