Thor: Ragnarok
Overview
Thor: Ragnarok is the third solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first directed by Taika Waititi. Released on November 3, 2017, the movie follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as he navigates a series of challenges to save Asgard from the impending apocalypse known as Ragnarök.
Storyline
The film begins with Thor imprisoned by the fire demon Surtur, who reveals that Odin (Anthony Hopkins) is no longer on Asgard. Surtur explains that the realm will soon be destroyed during Ragnarök, once Surtur unites his crown with the Eternal Flame that burns in Odin’s vault. Thor frees himself, defeats Surtur, and takes his crown, believing he has prevented Ragnarök. However, upon returning to Asgard, he finds Heimdall (Idris Elba) gone and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) posing as Odin. Loki forces Thor to help find their father, who Loki had put a spell on after his presumed sacrifice years before.
Thor discovers a Quinjet that brought Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to Sakaar, a planet ruled by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). A recording of Natasha Romanoff causes Hulk to transform back into Bruce Banner for the first time since leaving Sokovia. Thor, Banner, and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) escape through a wormhole to Asgard, where Hela (Cate Blanchett), their bloodthirsty older sister, attacks Heimdall and the Asgardian citizens. Hulk defeats Fenris, and Loki and the gladiators arrive to help. Skurge sacrifices himself to save the citizens, and Thor, battling Hela, loses his right eye and has a vision of Odin that helps him realize only Ragnarök can stop her.
Thor sends Loki to trigger Ragnarök by placing Surtur’s crown in the Eternal Flame. Surtur is reborn and destroys Asgard, killing Hela. The film concludes with Thor, now king, reconciling with Loki and deciding to take his people to Earth. The movie features two post-credits scenes: one showing the overthrown Grandmaster being confronted by his former subjects, and another hinting at the events leading up to Avengers: Infinity War.
