Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Overview
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the seventh installment in the Star Wars saga, directed by J.J. Abrams and written by Abrams, Lawrence Kasdan, and Michael Arndt. The film was released in 2015 and marked a significant return to the franchise after a decade-long hiatus. It is a sequel to the original trilogy and a prequel to the sequel trilogy, bridging the gap between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Last Jedi.
Plot Summary
Inciting Event
The film begins on the desert planet of Jakku, where we meet Rey (Daisy Ridley), a scavenger who lives in a harsh environment. She encounters BB-8, a droid carrying a crucial map to Luke Skywalker, the last Jedi. This encounter sets the stage for the inciting event, as Rey rescues BB-8 from scavengers and becomes embroiled in the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order.
First Plot Point
Rey and Finn (John Boyega), an ex-stormtrooper who defects from the First Order, team up to escape from the First Order’s pursuit. They flee in the Millennium Falcon, piloted by Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew). This marks the first plot point, where the protagonists are drawn into the conflict and become fugitives from the First Order.
First Pinch Point
The trio faces a new challenge when they are attacked by vengeful gangs seeking to recoup money lost from Han Solo’s smuggling activities. This pinch point introduces significant antagonistic elements and provides major clues about the evil Kylo Ren, who is revealed to be Han and Leia’s son.
Midpoint
Han takes Rey and Finn to meet Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o), a wise and powerful Force-sensitive being who owns a junkyard on Takodana. There, Rey discovers Luke’s old lightsaber, which triggers a Force vision that shakes her. The First Order attacks Maz’s base, forcing the group to move into action. This midpoint marks a turning point in the story, as the protagonists must now confront the First Order directly.
Second Pinch Point
During the battle at Maz’s base, Kylo Ren kidnaps Rey to extract information about Luke Skywalker. This second pinch point heightens the stakes, as Rey is subjected to Sith mind-torture techniques but manages to resist and escape using a Jedi mind trick.
Third Plot Point
The Resistance, led by General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), realizes that Starkiller Base, the First Order’s planet-sized superweapon, is charging up to destroy the Resistance base. This third plot point sets the stage for the climactic confrontation, as the heroes must find a way to destroy Starkiller Base before it’s too late.
Climax
Han Solo confronts his son Kylo Ren in a desperate attempt to bring him back from the dark side. However, Ren kills Han, and Chewbacca shoots Ren in the arm before detonating explosives, allowing Poe’s X-wing squad to attack Starkiller Base. The climax features a thrilling battle where Rey, now empowered by the Force, confronts Kylo Ren and manages to knock him down before being separated by an earthquake.
Climactic Moment
Rey and Finn are rescued by Chewbacca in the Millennium Falcon as Starkiller Base begins to fall apart. This climactic moment marks a temporary resolution but sets the stage for further battles with Kylo Ren.
Resolution
The film concludes with Rey returning to the Resistance to comfort Leia and see Finn’s wounds patched up. She then sets out with Chewbacca to follow the map and find Luke Skywalker, who is eventually located and presented with his lightsaber. The resolution provides a sense of closure but also leaves room for the next installment in the sequel trilogy.
