Introduction
Ocean’s 8 is a 2018 American heist comedy film directed by Gary Ross and written by Ross and Olivia Milch. The movie is a spin-off from Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s series, serving as the fourth installment in the franchise. The film features an ensemble cast, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter.
Storyline
The movie follows Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock), the younger sister of the late Danny Ocean. After serving a five-year prison sentence, Debbie is released and reunites with her former partner-in-crime, Lou (Cate Blanchett). Together, they plan a sophisticated heist at the annual Met Gala in New York City, targeting the one-of-a-kind, $150 million Cartier Toussaint diamond necklace worn by Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway).
Debbie assembles a team of expert women to help her pull off the heist. The team includes:
Rose Weil (Helena Bonham Carter): A disgraced fashion designer deeply in debt with the IRS.
Amita (Mindy Kaling): A jewelry maker and friend of Debbie’s who is eager to start her own life.
Nine Ball (Rihanna): A computer hacker.
Constance (Awkwafina): A street hustler and pickpocket.
Tammy (Sarah Paulson): A profiteer and another friend of Debbie’s who has been secretly selling stolen goods out of her family home.
The team’s plan involves convincing Daphne to wear the Toussaint necklace during the gala. They also manipulate Daphne’s date, Claude Becker (Richard Armitage), an art dealer who previously ratted out Debbie to the police. The heist involves a series of intricate steps, including digitally scanning the necklace to create a zircon duplicate and planting the real diamonds on Becker during the gala.
