The film stars Naomi Watts and Laura Harring in dual roles, with a cast that includes Justin Theroux, Ann Miller, Robert Forster, and many more.
Plot Summary
The film begins with a dreamlike sequence featuring jitterbugging couples and a smiling blonde woman, setting the tone for the surreal journey that follows. The story is set in motion by a car crash on Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles, where a brunette woman (Laura Harring) survives with amnesia. She hides in an empty apartment and is later discovered by an aspiring actress named Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), who assumes the woman is her aunt Ruth’s friend.
As the narrative unfolds, Betty and the amnesiac woman, who calls herself Rita, embark on a journey to uncover Rita’s identity. They find clues in Rita’s purse, including a large amount of money and an unusual blue key. Their investigation leads them to various locations across Los Angeles, including a mysterious nightclub called Club Silencio, where they experience a pivotal scene that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.
Characters and Actors
Naomi Watts plays both Betty Elms and Diane Selwyn. In the dream world, Betty is an aspiring actress who helps Rita uncover her past. In reality, Diane is a failed actress who was once in a romantic relationship with Camilla Rhodes (Laura Harring).
Laura Harring plays both Rita/Camilla Rhodes. In the dream world, Rita is the mysterious woman who survives the car crash. In reality, Camilla is a successful film star who left Diane for Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux).
Justin Theroux plays Adam Kesher, a Hollywood director whose film is commandeered by mobsters who insist he cast Camilla Rhodes as the lead actress. His personal life is also tumultuous, as his wife is cheating on him.
Critical Interpretation
Mulholland Drive has been interpreted in many ways by critics and viewers. Some see the first part of the film as Diane’s dream about her ideal life in Los Angeles, where she is a successful actress in a romantic relationship with Rita/Camilla. The second part is interpreted as the reality of Diane’s life, where she has failed both personally and professionally.
The film is also seen as a critique of the Hollywood dream factory, which withers many artists’ hopes and aspirations. The non-linear structure and dreamlike sequences add to the complexity and depth of the narrative, making it a challenging yet rewarding watch.
