Moulin Rouge: A Dazzling Musical Drama

Overview
Moulin Rouge is a 2001 Australian-American romantic drama musical film directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. The movie is set in Paris, France, at the turn of the 20th century and is part of Luhrmann’s Red Curtain trilogy, which also includes Strictly Ballroom (1992) and Romeo + Juliet (1996). This film boasts an ensemble cast starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, with notable performances from Jim Broadbent, John Leguizamo, and Richard Roxburgh.

Plot Summary
The movie follows the story of Christian, a young and penniless Scottish poet who arrives in the Montmartre district of Paris in 1899. Christian is part of the Bohemian movement and dreams of writing a major play. He meets Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and his troupe of performers, who are working on a play called Spectacular Spectacular. The troupe hopes that Christian’s talents will impress Satine, the star performer and courtesan of the Moulin Rouge, to convince Harold Zidler, the proprietor of the club, to let Christian write the show.

However, Zidler plans to have the wealthy and powerful Duke of Monroth sleep with Satine in exchange for financing to convert the club into a theater. Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke and attempts to seduce him, but eventually reveals her true intentions. Christian helps the troupe improvise a story for the Duke about a beautiful Indian courtesan who falls in love with a poor sitar player she mistook for an evil maharaja. The Duke agrees to invest, but only if Satine and the Moulin Rouge are turned over to him.

As construction at the Moulin Rouge progresses, Christian and Satine’s love deepens. However, their relationship is complicated by the Duke’s growing frustration and Zidler’s attempts to end their affair. Satine falls ill with consumption and tries to end things with Christian, but he writes a secret song that affirms their unending love. On the opening night of the show, Christian denounces Satine and vows to give her to the Duke, but Toulouse-Lautrec’s words inspire Satine to sing their secret song, causing Christian to change his mind. The show ends with Christian and Satine proclaiming their love as the Duke storms out of the cabaret. Unfortunately, Satine collapses after the curtains close and dies in Christian’s arms, asking him to write their story so she will always be with him.
