Home Alone: A Christmas Classic
Overview
Home Alone is a 1990 American comedy film directed by Chris Columbus and written by the renowned John Hughes. The movie is a timeless classic that has become synonymous with the holiday season. It follows the adventures of an 8-year-old boy named Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, who finds himself accidentally left behind by his family during the holidays.
Storyline
The film begins on the night before the McCallister family is set to leave for a holiday trip to Paris. The family is preparing for their departure, and the youngest child, Kevin, is feeling particularly left out. During a chaotic dinner, Kevin is teased by his siblings and cousins, and he provokes his older brother Buzz, leading to a series of accidents. As punishment, Kevin’s mother, Kate (Catherine O’Hara), sends him to the attic bedroom for the night. In a moment of frustration, Kevin wishes that his family would just disappear.
In the middle of the night, a power outage causes the alarm clocks to reset, leading to the family oversleeping and rushing to get to the airport on time. In their haste, Kevin is left behind, and they don’t realize it until they are in the air. When Kevin wakes up and finds the house empty, he believes his wish has come true.
Setting Up the Trap
Kevin soon realizes that he is truly alone and decides to make the most of his situation. He sets up the appearance of a house full of people by using lights and moving mannequins and stand-up poster cutouts to create silhouettes on the front curtains. When the burglars, Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), return, Kevin lights firecrackers and plays a gangster movie to make them think they are hearing another set of burglars fighting inside the house.
The Burglars’ Plan
On Christmas Eve, Harry and Marv return to see what is going on in the house. Kevin overhears their plan to come back at 9:00 pm that night. Missing his parents and the rest of his family, Kevin decides to visit Santa Claus and ask him for their return instead of Christmas presents. Unbeknownst to him, they have been frantically trying to get a flight back since the second they landed in Paris.
The Booby Traps
Once home, Kevin hoses down the outdoor steps to make them icy and sets up booby traps throughout the house. As Harry and Marv near the back door, Kevin shoots them with a pellet gun, causing them to fall on the ice. When they manage to get inside, Kevin’s traps cause numerous superficial injuries, and the burglars chase him in frustration. After Harry and Marv catch Kevin, his eccentric elderly neighbor, Old Man Marley (Roberts Blossom), sneaks up and knocks them out with a snow shovel.
The Climax
In the end, Harry and Marv are arrested, and Kevin’s family makes it home for Christmas morning. After their cheerful reunion, Kevin looks out the window and sees Marley hugging his son. The movie ends on a heartwarming note, showcasing the power of family and the joy of being together during the holidays.
