Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Overview
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a 2017 American superhero film directed by James Gunn and produced by Marvel Studios. The movie is the sequel to the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy and continues the adventures of the Guardians as they face new challenges and personal family issues.
Storyline
The film begins with the Guardians of the Galaxy, consisting of Peter Quill (Star-Lord), Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot, being hired by the Sovereign to protect their valuable batteries from an interdimensional monster. However, Rocket steals the batteries, leading to an attack by the Sovereign’s fleet. The Guardians crash-land on a nearby planet, where they meet Ego, who reveals himself to be Peter’s father, a god-like Celestial named Ego.
Ego explains that he created his home planet and manipulated matter to form it. He hired Yondu to collect Peter after his mother’s death but never received him. Ego has been searching for Peter ever since and has been teaching him to manipulate Celestial power. Meanwhile, Nebula, Gamora’s estranged sister, tries to kill Gamora but eventually forms an uneasy alliance with her when they discover a cavern filled with skeletal remains.
As the story unfolds, Peter learns about his true heritage and the sinister intentions of Ego. Ego reveals that he has been planting seedlings on various worlds that can terraform into new extensions of himself, but only the power of two Celestials can activate them. He also confesses to having given Peter’s mother a brain tumor to distract her, forcing him to parasitically draw Peter’s energy to activate the seedlings.
The Guardians eventually discover Ego’s plan and travel to his brain at the planet’s core. They fight off the Sovereign’s drones and Ego’s powers. In a climactic battle, Peter uses his newfound Celestial powers to fight Ego, while Rocket makes a bomb using the stolen batteries, which Groot plants on Ego’s brain. The bomb explodes, killing Ego and disintegrating the planet.
