Green Book: A Detailed Description
Overview
Green Book is a 2018 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Peter Farrelly. The movie is inspired by the true story of Don Shirley, an African American classical pianist, and Frank Tony Lip Vallelonga, an Italian American bouncer who served as Shirley’s driver and bodyguard during a 1962 tour of the Deep South. The film stars Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip and Mahershala Ali as Dr. Don Shirley.
Storyline
The movie begins with Tony Lip, a working-class Italian-American bouncer from the Bronx, who is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a sophisticated African American classical pianist, on a concert tour through the Deep South in 1962. The journey is fraught with challenges, including racial tensions and cultural differences.
As they travel through sundown towns and rural areas, Tony and Don face numerous obstacles. They are arrested in Mississippi after police pull them over late at night, and Tony punches an officer after being insulted. Don, however, uses his connections to secure their release, calling Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to pressure the governor and police officers to let them go.
Despite these challenges, Tony and Don develop a bond over time. Tony helps Don write letters to his wife, which deeply move her, and encourages Don to reconnect with his estranged brother. However, their relationship is tested when Don is found in a homosexual encounter with a white man at a pool, and Tony bribes officers to prevent his arrest.
The film also explores themes of racism, segregation, and the complexities of human relationships. It highlights the tension between Don’s high social status and his desire for human connection, as well as Tony’s initial prejudices and his eventual growth as a person.
