Goodfellas: A Detailed Description
Introduction
Goodfellas, directed by the renowned Martin Scorsese, is a critically acclaimed American biographical gangster film released in 1990. The movie is based on the true story of Henry Hill, a mobster who became an FBI informant. The screenplay was written by Nicholas Pileggi and Martin Scorsese, with Pileggi’s 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family serving as the primary source material.
Storyline
The film spans the years from 1955 to 1980, following the life of Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta) as he rises through the ranks of the Lucchese crime family. Henry, a young man from a lower-income background, is initially drawn to the allure of the mobster lifestyle. He begins working as an errand boy for local mobsters and quickly gains power and influence, enjoying the privileges and perks that come with it.
The movie delves into the closed-circle culture of organized crime, where couples and families socialize only with others who work for the mob. Henry’s relationship with Karen (played by Lorraine Bracco) is central to the narrative, as they navigate the complexities of their lives within the mob.
The film also explores Henry’s involvement in significant events, including the 1978 Lufthansa heist at John F. Kennedy International Airport, which resulted in the murders of some of his associates. This heist and its aftermath lead to a series of events that ultimately destroy Henry’s life and those of his friends and family.
As Henry becomes increasingly involved in cocaine trafficking, he becomes addicted and is eventually arrested. Realizing he will not survive unless he becomes an informant for the FBI, Henry testifies against his former associates, including Jimmy Conway (played by Robert De Niro) and Paulie Cicero (played by Paul Sorvino). The film concludes with Henry entering the witness protection program with Karen and their children, reflecting on his past life as a mobster and lamenting his new status as an average nobody…a schnook.
