Introduction
Marvel’s Eternals is a 2021 superhero film directed by Chloé Zhao and produced by Marvel Studios. The movie is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and marks a significant addition to the franchise. It stars an ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie.
Storyline
The film is set in a vast timeline, beginning with the creation of the Eternals and their Deviant counterparts by the Celestials. The Eternals are a group of immortal beings with superhuman abilities, tasked with protecting humanity from the Deviants. The story follows ten Eternals who emerge from hiding after thousands of years to protect Earth from the Deviants once again.
Key Characters and Actors
Gemma Chan as Sersi: Sersi is an empathetic Eternal with a deep love for humanity and the Earth. She can manipulate and transform matter through physical contact. In the present day, she is a museum curator on Earth and is dating Dane Whitman. Director Chloé Zhao and Gemma Chan aimed to create a nuanced female superhero, imbuing Sersi with gentleness, compassion, and vulnerability.
Richard Madden as Ikaris: Ikaris is the strongest Eternal, with a deep connection to Thena. He has incredible strength, flight, and the ability to project cosmic energy beams from his eyes. Ikaris’ character is complex, as he is initially loyal to Arishem but later questions his orders, leading to a dramatic turn in the story.
Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo: Kingo is one of the Eternals most involved with humanity. He is a Bollywood star in the present day and has the ability to emit cosmic energy explosions and projectiles from his hands. Kingo’s character evolves hilariously from a movie action star to a more traditional warrior.
Lia McHugh as Sprite: Sprite is the youngest main cast member and portrays a character with a unique ability to manipulate cosmic energy. She is also in an unrequited love relationship with Ikaris, which adds a personal dimension to the story.
Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos: Phastos is a genius technopath who can create any invention or weapon using cosmic energy. He is also the first openly LGBTQ+ superhero in the MCU, depicted as having a husband with whom he shares a kiss during the film.
Salma Hayek as Ajak: Ajak is the wise and spiritual leader of the Eternals. She has healing abilities and serves as a bridge between the Eternals and the Celestials. Her character adds a maternal figure to the group, providing guidance and support.
Angelina Jolie as Thena: Thena is an elite warrior capable of creating virtually any weapon out of cosmic energy. She has a close bond with fellow Eternal Gilgamesh and is one of the deadliest members of the group.
Plot Summary
The film begins with the creation of the Eternals and their mission to protect humanity from the Deviants. The story then jumps to the present day, where Sersi and Sprite live together in London. Sersi is in a relationship with Dane Whitman, a human who works at the Natural History Museum. When the trio is attacked by the Deviant Kro, Ikaris arrives and chases the creature away.
The Eternals reunite to face a new threat, the Emergence, which is a catastrophic event that could destroy Earth. However, their opinions differ on how to proceed, leading to internal conflicts. Ikaris, who is initially loyal to Arishem, refuses to help stop the Emergence, while Sprite joins him due to her unrequited love. Kingo chooses to leave, and the group is eventually attacked by the Deviants.
The film culminates with the Eternals trying to delay the Emergence. Phastos proposes using the Uni-Mind, a connection between all the Eternals, to give Druig enough power to put Tiamut to sleep. However, Ikaris’ actions lead to Ajak’s death, and Sersi is posthumously chosen as her successor, granting her the ability to communicate with Arishem.
